I've wanted to do an illustration like this for a few years now! I call them "The Elles" because of the similar ending to their names. My original idea was to draw Ariel, Belle, Giselle, and Tinkerbell as students in each respective Hogwarts house. Since that sort of thing has been done to death, and I had so much fun with the Hipster Ariel drawings, I decided to go this route instead. With "Tangled" having been released last year, I added Rapunzel too!
I designed a cool hipster NYC apartment too, but I felt that the additional detail would have taken focus away from the girls. This background also makes it feel more like a set with my previous Ariel illustrations.
I love designing outfits, though it is often quite time-consuming. I thought it would be easy creating the color palette as well since that was basically done for me, but even that took far more effort than I expected. Luckily, Photoshop allows you to experiment with different hues and values easily.
There were a few things I wanted to add, but didn't, such as an iPod for Rapunzel and a vintage camera for Belle. Ariel's wave shirt is based off of Superman's "S" shield, and of course her scarf is Flotsam/Jetsam.
I was going to do color holds on practically everything for that Disney look, but it would had added a lot more time, so I chose my spots instead.
Pencils and inks below!
You can see my roughed in background in the pencils. I've been penciling much more loose than I'm used to (though I should still loosen up further) so that I have more fun and spontaneity when I ink.
Rather than fix little things here and there in the penciling stage, I just do it when I ink. Sometimes that backfires on me, but it generally saves a fair amount of time. One glaring issue I had to fix was the length of Giselle's right forearm, but that was a quick fix. Aside from that, the rest of the piece went pretty smoothly!
One of my dreams is to meet Glen Keane. "The Little Mermaid" was what inspired me to become an artist and storyteller. I adore Disney (and Pixar) movies. I wish I had more time to do fan art, but hopefully this illustration gets it out of my system for a while.
Late Night Light Bulbs
I could have modeled watches if art hadn't twisted my hand into a gnarled monkey claw.
